State officials identify victims of Sunday home explosion in Blairsville

An elderly couple died when their home exploded Sunday morning.

78-year-old Ralph Norris Wood Jr. and 77-year-old Peggy Wood were home at the time of the incident and died of their injuries, said Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King.

The explosion occurred at 307 Pauline Lane in Blairsville, destroying the 1,594-square-foot home that was about 26 years old.

Several homes in the area also were damaged, and due to the severity of the explosion it could take several weeks before the cause is determined, King said.

The explosion remains under active investigation by King’s Fire Investigation Division, assisted by Union County Fire Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Union County Coroner’s Office.
